Lunch ‘N’ Learn Webinar - Strategies to Lessen the Impact of the COVID Pandemic on the Behavioral and Mental Health Problems of Youth and Their Families

Presenter: Michael L. Handwerk, Ph.D., LCP : Director of Psychological Services at Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare Systems

Overview: This presentation will provide a brief overview of how the COVID pandemic has impacted the behavioral and mental health problems of youth and their families, including those with pre-existing problems prior to the pandemic. Intervention strategies for both youth (e.g., relaxation, normalization, mindfulness, behavioral activation, etc.) and families/parents (e.g., routine, modification of expectations, modeling, increased positive attention, etc.) will be discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of teletherapy in addressing these needs will also be briefly discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify 2-3 ways the pandemic has impacted the behavioral and mental health problems of youth and their families
  • Understand who may be most vulnerable to the impact of the pandemic
  • Learn 3-4 strategies that may be helpful for youth in reducing their stress
  • Learn 3-4 strategies that may be helpful for families to reduce problems exacerbated by the pandemic
  • Understand the advantages and limitations of teletherapy for various susceptible clientele

Continuing Education Credits:

2.0 CEU’s are available for LCSW, LCPC, LSW, LPC, and QIDP

All other professionals are encouraged to check with their respective licensing boards for questions about whether this workshop meets criteria for continuing education credits.

Following the event, attendees will receive an email with a link to the online evaluation to complete.  Once the evaluation response window closes, CEU certificates will be emailed.  This process takes approximately 3 weeks following the event.
