Overview: This training will explore Harm Reduction strategies and psychotherapy approaches that emphasize meeting people where they are at and that any positive change is change. This consists of a move away from the disease model toward a bio-psycho-social process model for understanding addiction and a shift from an abstinence-only to an integrative harm reduction approach to public health and treatment. 

The presentation covers harm reduction philosophy and strategies, relevant policies and advocacy support for harm reduction, psychotherapy skills using a harm reduction approach, and medication-assisted recovery (MAR).

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify practical skills and strategies such as risk reduction, safer use, syringe programs, overdose prevention sites, naloxone, medications for substance use disorders, and abstinence.
  • Review description and clinical rationale of integrative harm reduction approach to treating substance misuse and other risky behaviors.
  • Overview of supportive statewide and federal policies.

Continuing Education Credits:

2.0 CEU’s are available for LCSW, LCPC, LSW, LPC, and QIDP

All other professionals are encouraged to check with their respective licensing boards for questions about whether this workshop meets criteria for continuing education credits.

Following the event, attendees will receive an email with a link to the online evaluation to complete. Evaluations open within 2 business days post-event and remain open for 10 days. All attendees MUST complete the online evaluation in order to receive a CEU certificate, no exceptions. Once the evaluation response window closes, CEU certificates will be emailed. This process takes approximately 3 weeks following the event.
