Dear Public Health Partners,
This is urgent. As many of you know, I serve as the Principal Investigator for one of our nation's Public Health Training Centers. I'm writing to ask you to help keep our Public Health Training Centers alive.
The Public Health Training Centers are one of the only sources of public health workforce and leadership development training in the nation. This funding has supported training in Illinois for over 15 years, including the Rural Health Conferences, Communication Training, MARPHLI, performance management, quality improvement and accreditation training, Project Best Practice, Environmental Public Health, Emergency Preparedness, change leadership training and much much more.
**As of now, both of the House and President's Budget have eliminated our funding starting year.** We understand that the Senate Budget is being finalized next week.
Senator Durbin is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and I'm asking you to either call (202-224-2152) or email his staff (firstname.lastname@example.org) ASAP before Close of Business Tuesday Sept 5, 2017 and request the Public Health Training Centers be restored to the Senate Budget. If you get a busy signal, please keep trying. The Illinois office is 312-353-4952 but we were advised to call the D.C. line.
Sample language for an email is below and attached is a short overview of the our Public Health Training Centers.
Please contact me if you have any questions and thank you in advance for your partnership.

Dear Senator Durbin and Staff,
I am a xxx and a partner of the Public Health Training Center HRSA Region V located at the University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Public Health.
I’m writing to request that you contact the Senate Appropriations Committee to ask that public health training centers be fully funded in FY18. Specifically, please request that the Health Resources and Services Administration “Public Health Workforce” line-item at $21.9 million be included in the FY18 budget.
Public health training centers advance population health by ensuring our health workforce has the skills necessary to combat key threats to the nation’s health, including the opioid epidemic, Zika, and chronic diseases. The HRSA budget is the only source of federal funding to support this vital program. The President’s budget and the House Appropriations bill completely eliminated the Public Health Workforce Development program which funds public health training centers. The Senate must include funding for this program, and I ask that you reach out to the committee to ensure its inclusion.
I’m attaching a short flyer on the Public Health Training Center. If you have any questions or would like to talk further, do not hesitate to contact me at xxx or xx.
