As an association of organizations and professionals from the Illinois public health system, we strongly condemn the violent extremism in Charlottesville over the last weekend. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives.
It is in the greatest interest of public health that the ideas of racism, white-supremacy, and xenophobia be eradicated from our society. These events highlight that our work in public health is necessary and as a unified community we must do everything we can to facilitate positive social change. It is the responsibility of every one of us to speak out against the poisonous philosophies that were displayed in Charlottesville this weekend.
We urge President Trump, members of Congress, Governor Rauner, and leaders across our nation to strongly reject racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred in all its forms. It is the ethical duty of these leaders to honor the fundamental values of our nation by doing so.
